From Decent drive, but thunderbolt speeds are aweful The size of the drive is pretty big (dimensions, not storage wise), and the thunderbolt & usb3 speeds are not not great. In using a late 2013 iMac and mid 2013 MacBook Pro, I was disappointed in the speeds. The max for either USB3, or thunderbolt was usually 295MBs Write / 359MB Read.
I benchmarked it 3 times, and those are the averages. For thunderbolt, I would've expected it to be at least 500MB R/W (preferably in the 700-800MB range) I tested it using blackmagic, and wasn't really stunned or blown away by the results. Would I recommend, maybe, but don't think it's anything to write home about. Rated 5 out of 5 by Spike da Peke from Fast, Light, Well Designed I bought the StoreJet 500in the petite 256 GB in size for two reasons: first I needed a drive to carry large multi-gigabyte files back and forth between two sites. I suppose this is even small enough to carry in a pocket, but generally I put it inside it supplied slipcover and travel with it inside a protected compartment of a backpack.
The second reason for the purchase was to have an emergency boot drive for my multiple Mac office. I own several iMacs, and always worry about the possibility of an internal drive failure, especially in the older machines. So, I've formatted it as a bootable drive with a complete current OS X 10 and the required software set for my office. OS X 10 in the current iteration occupies less than 9 GB. My minimum software installation requires another 10 GB. Just to be sure everything works, I've restarted two iMac's after using system preferences to designate it as a the start up drive, and it works like a charm.
I did have one problem when the drive arrived. The supplied 0.5 meter Thunderbolt cable was dead on arrival. The super people at B&H customer service were able to send me a quick replacement, and now all is well.
Speed: Please remember: this is an inexpensive Thunderbolt 1 device. My system reports indicates that it operates only at a single Thunderbolt channel - 1 layer at 10GB per second. Thunderbolt 2 devices operate at two channels or layers totalling 20 GB per second, but if you want that speed, you need to pony up a lot more money.
Subjective Speed assessment: Owning several multiple internal and external hard drives and SSD's. I find this drive to be very quick- though not as fast as the internal 1TB on my latest generation iMac when copying large (12 to 20 GB) files. I do note that on one of my oldest machines (late 2011 27 3.4 gHz i7 with 24 GB of ram and a 1 TB hard drive that it seems slower. It's still lots faster than the internal hard drive, but I suspect the older Mac's firmware or internal bus design have reduced throughput, even for a nominally Thunderbolt 1 device.
Rated 2 out of 5 by OFM from I would've just stuck with SanDisk USB3.0 SSD's. I've been using SanDisk SSD drive (USB 3.0), and heard that Thunderbolt is a lot faster so gave it a try. First of all, compared to SanDisk, which is very thin and beautifully designed, this Transcend looks more like traditional hard drive with its big size. It looks like it needs to be handled with care. And for the speed, I don't notice any difference.
I am a video editor and I work on MacBook Pro with all the files in external SSD drive. Considering the price which was about twice higher than the SanDisk, I think I made a poor decision.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Acorn Video Man from Does the job. I built a PC for video editing and I used a mother board that has a Thunderbolt port.
My purpose was to have the capability to have an external solid state HD video storage site that I could edit from. I have Windows 7 and I had to reformat this drive, but I got that accomplished in relatively short order. So far this set up performs as I hoped it would. I edit HD video directly off this solid state hard drive and so far works as I had hoped.
I use Vegas Pro 13.
