The most discouraging part, the director of athletics said, is that he was in their shoes in 1993, when he was a freshman on the Ferris State baseball team when it was cut. 'This is obviously a low point in my professional career,' said Wetherbee, tearing up in a news conference Tuesday morning. 'But 25 years ago, I went through this. I sat in their seat, so I know exactly how they feel.

'The toughest part for me was standing before the coaches and student-athletes. I have been here eight months. I harp on student-athlete experience and helping our coaches succeed, so I feel like I am disappointing them, pulling that experience and opportunity away. They came here to compete and to get a degree, and now they won't be able to do that.

I feel handcuffed. I walked into a terrible situation. I knew the budget was bad, I just didn't know it was going to be this bad.' In an effort to stabilize its budget for the 2018 fiscal year, EMU has made cuts across several departments. Tuesday's decision to, effective at the end of the 2018 spring season, will save the university approximately $2.4 million from its current athletics budget of about $27 million, Wetherbee said, noting that includes a $17 million operating budget and $10 million allocated for scholarships. EMU also as it faces a budget deficit between $4.5 million to $5.5 million for the 2018 fiscal year, according to university President James Smith.

Wetherbee said he informed the head coaches of the four programs Monday night and told the assistant coaches and student-athletes Tuesday morning. The move affects 58 male and 25 female student-athletes, although the university said it will continue their athletic scholarships, along with any incoming freshmen who have signed their National Letters of Intent.

Eight coaches also are affected. 'We have got to help them, whether they want to stay and get their degree or transfer to another school,' Wetherbee said. 'They didn't come here knowing this was going to happen.

They woke up this morning not thinking anything was wrong, and I just wrecked their world. We are going to have help for them.' EMU previously led the Mid-American Conference with 21 sports and will now have 17 - seven men's sports and 10 women's sports. The university must have at least 16 athletic programs to remain in the MAC. Wetherbee said many sports were reviewed, but wrestling, softball, women's tennis and men's swimming and diving were chosen based on the university's facilities for those sports and how many other MAC teams they compete against. There are now 11 schools in the MAC with softball programs, eight with women's tennis programs, five with wrestling programs and two with men's swimming programs. All MAC schools are required to have football, volleyball and men's and women's basketball programs.

The Eagles' men's swimming program has been one of the most successful at the school. The team, currently led by 29-year head coach Peter Linn, has won 34 MAC championships, four NAIA National Championships and an NCAA Division II National Championship. Linn also is head coach of the women's program. 'This is the option we landed on,' Wetherebee said.

'I think if you look at the MAC, we were at 21. Is 21 really sustainable with the current budget we have? 'Unfortunately, it is the right thing to do. If I didn't think it was the right thing to do, I wouldn't be sitting here, as emotional and as hard as it is. It is what should have been done before I got here, but it didn't and I will be the one to have to own this.' Wetherbee said there will be no more programs cut.

The last time EMU changed its sports offerings was in 2000, when both men's tennis and men's soccer were discontinued and women's rowing was added. Prior to that, men's gymnastics and women's field hockey were eliminated in 1988. 'I think today will be a little bit of a black eye, but I think the rest of the coaches and student-athletes know there is not more to cut,' Wetherbee said.

'Sixteen is the limit, and we are at 17 right now, so there is not an expectation to cut anymore.'

Michigan State was only able to pull within two points at 8-6, before the Eagles put them away to close out the set 15-10. Rathje once again led all players with three kills on the set. Aside from Rathje's double-double, the Spartans also saw Emro, Schatzle and Zlabis end the night with double-doubles.

Emro quarterbacked the offense with 34 assists and tied a season-best digs with 12. Schatzle recorded 19 kills and a career-best 13 digs, while Zlabis tallied 12 kills and 15 digs. Schatzle also tied a career-high service aces with two. Emro was the top defender at the net for MSU with her four blocks on the night. Rathje and freshman (Detroit, Mich.) each chipped in with three blocks. Senior (Muskegon, Mich.) dug 11 balls for the Spartans.
